LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The mother of a 22-year-old man charged with capital murder in the death of a Little Rock teenager is shedding light on her son–who she says is innocent.

In an exclusive interview, she tells Fox16 News two alleged gang members changed her son’s life.

Kenwan Sherrod, 22,  is facing murder charges in 14-year-old Cyncere Alexander’s death.

Essence Sherrod, Kenwan’s mother,  says Kenwan never knew his father, and he was always looking up to his older brother, who was murdered four years ago.

“He just took off going in his own direction,” says Essence Sherrod.

“I knew I had lost him,” says Essence.

Chris Alexander, Cyncere’s dad and alleged former Crip stepped up to help to become Kenwan’s first-ever father figure.

“Just let him come with me I will help him through everything that he is going through so I am mourning I’m grieving I’m reaching out,” she says.

Essence says a year later, Machita Mitchell, also charged with capital murder in Cyncere’s death, came into the picture.

“Kenwan started really, really changing once he started hanging around the both of them,” says Essence.

Essence says she felt her son slipping into the arms of Chris and Machita, who Essence says is an alleged Crip.

“He told me that my child was used to eating cheeseburgers and now he’s eating steaks,” she says.

Kenwan’s mom says she doesn’t know if her middle child is a Crip, but says she knows he wasn’t there when Cyncere was murdered.

“Whoever did it needs to do the time that was an innocent baby he hadn’t lived know where half of this life,” says Essence.

Essence tells me whoever killed Cyncere needs to do the time.

It’s worth noting–Machita was in jail when Cyncere was murdered but is still charged in his death along with three other men, including Kenwan.
