BROOKLAND, Ark. — Students in Northeast Arkansas have banded together to raise thousands of dollars for a sick classmate.

Slade Smith is a seventh grader at Brookland Junior High.

He’s currently battling leukemia.

Fellow students were shocked by his diagnosis, so they decided to do something to help.

They hosted a 5k  race and sold t-shirts and bracelets to raise money for Slade’s family.

Students Jadyn Langston and Suzannah Lantz had this to say about their classmates.
“I was really shocked just because when you think of somebody getting cancer, you think of your mom or grandma or someone like that. You don’t really think about a little kid being able to get it”.

This week, they were able to present $3,000 to Slade’s dad and older brother.

Slade sadly couldn’t be there because he is undergoing treatment.
