FAYETTEVILLE, AR (KNWA) – A gay pride flag has been stolen from a Fayetteville woman’s front door and burned, and it’s stirred up quite a reaction from the property owner.

“We didn’t find out until after that police report was filed, that not only was it stolen but it was burned,” says Jenifer Chadbourne. “This happened right outside my door.”

Chadbourne lives at Club at the Creek apartments. The flag was taken from her garden on Friday.

“What would be the point of doing this? I mean, it’s not like it ‘ungayed’ anything,” she says.

Chadbourne believes a fellow resident at the apartment complex is behind it.

“If it wasn’t a resident I doubt they would know or even think to go down to the courtyard and burn it,” says Chadbourne. “The fact that they burned it down there, speaks volumes.”

“One day it’s a flag being ripped out of a garden and burned, the other day it could be someone being harassed at a cafe,” she adds.

The Club at the Creek’s property owner is choosing to react via Facebook, stating that anyone who harasses tenants for any reason “will be evicted.”

Chadbourne says the act of hate has only served as a growth of support.

“I decided to instead of get angry, to get creative,” she explains. “If somebody wants to come by and take those flags, you know that’s completely fine, I’ll put out even more.”

There’s no word yet on who is responsible for stealing and burning the pride flag.
