ARKADELPHIA– A police body cam captures the moment a woman gets physical with an officer.
In the middle of what police say was about 30 people, an officer working to calm the scene down gets hit in the face.
Police say it’s an example of what they’re up against and how they have to respond.
The Arkadelphia Police Department says they’re getting to the point where nearly every case has video to go with it.
More often than not, it’s helping the officers and this is one of their latest.
A left hook-slap to the face of an Arkadelphia police officer, caught on his body cam.
“Somebody came and slapped me across the face, I’d probably do the same to them,” says Sharon Ford
Some people we talked to expected a fight to follow.
From the office downtown, Lt. Jason Jackson can review all the officer videos.
He says all citizen contact the Arkadelphia Police Department has made in the last six months has been recorded by their new body cams.
This “contact” though, quickly became physical.
“She is obviously the root of the problem during this whole disturbance,” Jackson says.
Responding to a fight in an apartment complex, Corporal Joseph Paull has a camera mounted on his glasses, providing a perfect vantage point, but it wasn’t the only one.
“It’s real nice for the judge to be able to see exactly what we see,” says Jackson.
A third person angle from a second officer captures the hit as well, and how Corporal Paull responds.
“We’re seeing overwhelmingly in these videos the restraint that our officers have,” Jackson claims.
Corporal Paull pulls her away from the scene back to his car, then puts cuffs on her.
“So he did handle it the correct way, ” Ford comments.
Which is a different tune than what some are used to.
“With so much going on across the country, I think it’s really hard for people in the public to grasp the concept of the officer’s here to help me,” Karen Nelson says.
The woman got a plea deal last week, that convicted her with a misdemeanor third degree battery involving an officer. She got probation.
We’re told when she came for an alcohol screening at court on Wednesday, became combative with the probation officer and got 100 days in jail.
