LITTLE ROCK– New laws passed during the last legislative session go into effect Wednesday, including one dealing with domestic violence.
“Laura’s Law” requires officers responding to a domestic violence call, to ask the victim a series of questions. The questions are aimed at determining whether the person’s life is in danger, which would trigger the officer referring the victim to a domestic violence shelter.
The woman behind “Laura’s Law”, is from Carroll county.
Laura Ponce, the mother of 21-year-old Laura Aceves, says her daughter was killed due to domestic violence.
The mom says Victor Acuna-Sanchez was arrested and released from jail several times for beating and choking her daughter.
Then in 2012, police say the suspect shot Laura in the head, killing her.
Now, the mom is helping other victims fight for justice.
“That made me feel at least she was visible, a little bit,” said Ponce, “I cannot believe to see another family go through what I went through.”
Acuna-Sanchez is currently serving a 25-year-sentence for first degree murder.
