Update (3:45 p.m.):
LITTLE ROCK, AR – A female correctional officer is recovering after being stabbed by an inmate inside an Arkansas state prison.
The attack happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Varner SuperMax Unit in Gould. Arkansas Department of Correction (ADOC) officials describe the weapon as a metal rod.
The officer, identified as Cynthia Reed, 56, called for help and was found on the floor with two puncture wounds, according to a news release issued late Monday afternoon. She was taken to UAMS in Little Rock, where she was treated and released. ADOC officials say she has worked for the prison system since April 2013.
The inmate suspected in the attack is identified as Christopher Brewer, 34, who is serving 20 years for a 2007 second-degree murder conviction from Franklin County. In May, Brewer was convicted of kidnapping and aggravated assault. In that case, Brewer held a nurse hostage at the Cummins Unit. He was sentenced to 30 years for the kidnapping and 12 years for aggravated assault. He is serving the sentences consecutively.
An investigation into Monday’s incident is ongoing.

A spokesperson with the Arkansas Department of Correction says it happened at the Varner SuperMax Unit in Gould.
There’s no word on the officer’s condition and their name is not yet being released.
