CARROLL COUNTY, AR (KOLR) As of Thursday afternoon, Carroll County authorities were still searching for a missing man whose SUV was swept off the road during a flash flood on Wednesday night.
The Holiday Island Fire Department says the search is focusing on an area along Leatherwood Creek, which is near Highway 187, north of Eureka Springs.
Crews began searching the creek around 7:30 Wednesday night, but were forced to suspend their search temporarily due to severe weather conditions.
“The temperature of the water is in the 40s,” said Holiday Island Fire Chief Jack Deaton. “We worked until two o’clock this [Thursday] morning, got about two hours of sleep, and we are back at it again.”
When crews arrived back at the creek early Thursday morning, they were able to find the man’s SUV for the first time because the water level had dropped nearly 14 feet.
It is now believed the missing driver is George Pshyney, of Elk Ranch.
The Holiday Island Fire Department said Pshyney was on his way home from the store when his vehicle was swept away.
“I’ve been in the area about 30 years, and this is the highest I’ve ever seen the water get,” said Chief Deaton.
Deaton said the area received more than seven inches of rain in less than a three hour period.
“We had to evacuate people from homes [Wednesday night],” Deaton said. “We’ve never had to do that before.”
Search teams spent most of Thursday trying to get the SUV upright, which they did at around 4 p.m., but no one was inside.
The search will now be broadened out to the area downstream from where the SUV was located, roughly a mile from where Leatherwood Creek runs into Table Rock Lake.
