CONWAY, AR — A local family was left feeling unsafe in their home after a mother and child were beaten and robbed last weekend. They said they didn’t just fear for their safety, but other families living in the neighborhood with women who stay at home alone during the day.

The road to their home was long, quiet and traveled only by familiar faces.

“There’s a lot of good people in Arkansas,” said one woman who lives in the home and did not want to be identified.

The family said that included the men who broke into their home and attacked their mother and 9-year-old sister.

“For her mom to see her little girl to get hit and get dragged around and she can’t do nothing about it,” the woman continued.

The attack left physical and emotional trauma for the two victims who were afraid to show their faces on camera.

“She didn’t even want to go back to school, she didn’t want to come home after the hospital. She didn’t want to come back here,” said the mother’s adult daughter.

The family’s home also had signs of the struggle from the robbery. Police reports stated a man who had worked with the family in the past showed up at the home uninvited and asked if any of the men were home. When the mother told him no, he left, but came back a few minutes later and kicked through the door.

According to the report, two men barged in and dragged the mother and daughter by their hair, demanding them to show them where money and guns were in the house.

The adult daughter said her mother told her the men dragged them to the kitchen, living room and upstairs to a bedroom, which they tore apart.

In the midst of the invasion, the report states the mother was hit “in the head every time she turned her head to see what they were taking.”

“How can you do that? To drag somebody up the stairs, down the stairs, beat them in the face,” said the adult daughter. “She’s only 9 years old.”

The Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) said the men stole a handgun, rifle, cellphone and designer handbag. But the daughters said they also stole their sense of security — something that would take a while to get back.

“The officer was telling us it’s somebody you know. [Someone who] knows what you have in your house, knows what kind of life you have so they’re going to come after you. I mean, it’s kind of true,” the woman adds.

The FCSO said it interviewed a man the family suspected was one of the robbers and he had been cleared of being a suspect for the time being. This case is still under investigation.
