PINE BLUFF — Two parents were caught on camera breaking into a convenience store while holding their infant son.
Authorities say 34-year-old Nicholas and 29-year-old Brandi Crist broke into DJ’s One Stop early Wednesday morning. A neighbor says she found Crist asleep on her front porch in the middle of the night with his crying baby curled up by his side.
“It’s very alarming and disheartening. The fact that a baby or a small child is actually involved in the situation,” said Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Major Lafayette Woods.
Deputies say when Crist had his fill of stealing cigarettes and candy, he and his wife ran off.
“Something told me they weren’t barking at the cat,” said Witness Mylynn White.
White says her dog Samantha woke her up, alerting her to something on her porch. She saw Crist laying on his back and curled up next to him was the 14-month-old baby.
“The baby was wet and filthy,” said White.
White called police.
“As soon as he (deputies) got here I got out and got the baby from him,” said White.
The mother of three says her instincts took over.
“I grabbed him (infant) up and took him in and looked him over. I don’t even know why I looked him over, something told me to look him over,” said White.
With Crist in cuffs and the baby in her arms White says she made a disturbing discovery.
“He (infant) had cuts and blood…and a busted lip,” said White.
The store the couple chose to rob happens to be owned by White’s brother. White says she’s glad the baby is now in DHS custody away from two parents who brought him along on a crime spree.
“Yeah, I’d like to know how he is. Hopefully that baby gets a good life,”said White.
Deputies say Crist stole roughly $60 worth of goods. Both parents are in custody and are now facing a $10,000 bond each. Among other charges the couple is facing a battery charge because of the infants condition.
