HOT SPRING COUNTY, AR – A six-year-old who was riding his bike on a dirt road in Hot Spring County was flown to the hospital Wednesday night with critical injuries.
We were here this evening as the little boy got to come home. He has serious damage to his face but his dad tells me he’ll be okay.
“There was a big crash. I mean you heard it.”
Before he could make it to the six-year-old lying in the street Charles Long knew it was his son.
“I thought he was dead when I went out. And I picked him up and he was unresponsive at first and he come to life. But even at that point I thought I was holding my son that was going to die,” said Long.
The injuries were gruesome.
“His whole face was hanging off.”
Charles Long says his son was riding his bike on Gifford Road Wednesday evening like always when what we’re told was a white Pontiac hit his son.
“And slung him out here into the road.”
Lifenet flew the six-year-old to Children’s Hospital in Little Rock.
Sheriff Ed Hollingsworth and the Hot Spring County Sheriffs Office is investigating what happened along with the state police.
Charles’ son has since been released from the hospital. The doctors say his eyes are OK but he may have permanent nerve damage.
And while he had only worried for his son’s safety, he now has a different focus.
“Before I was just really scared. Now I’m mad,” said Long.
But he hopes that his son’s story and scars he’ll live with forever will be enough to get drivers everywhere to slow down.
“Do the speed limit man. Don’t take anybody’s kids from him.”
