PULASKI COUNTY, AR – The Pulaski County Special School District (PCSSD) has suspended a teacher during a police investigation into accusations that he choked a student.
The North Pulaski High School teacher is accused of the assault that allegedly happened on Tuesday.
According to a Jacksonville Police incident report the 17-year-old male student told police he called the teacher a name before the teacher elbowed, choked and slapped the student at lunch.
“We don’t want it to happen inside of our schools or at our grocery stores or within our community. Of course we are going to take the time to investigate it and make sure that the proper channels are followed,” says April Kiser.
A PCSSD spokeswoman confirmed an incident involving a teacher and a student saying whenever allegations are made against an employee regarding any type of misconduct the employee is dismissed from work while an investigation is going on. In this case PCSSD has turned the matter over to the Jacksonville Police Department.
The teacher did have a conflicting story telling police that after the student mouthed a curse word at him, he bumped into the student to get his attention but the student punched toward the teacher’s injured leg. In reaction, he told police, he reached toward the student’s chin but the student moved the teacher’s hands to his neck. He told Police that on the way to the office after the altercation, the student was scratching at his own neck.
According to the police report, when officers arrived at the school the principal stated the teacher approached the student in the lunch room and choked him. He told the officer that the incident was caught on the security camera in the lunch room.
