SEARCY, AR – A local woman is being treated in a Little Rock hospital after police say her own grandson shot her.

It happened Monday morning at the Heffner St. home of the 65-year-old Rachel Maples. As of Tuesday afternoon she was still being treated for an injury described only as “life threatening.”

Searcy Police say officers were called to the scene around 8 a.m. for a reported suicide.

When officers arrived, Grant Crawford, 24, allegedly told them that his grandmother had shot herself.

During the course of the investigation, detectives determined that Crawford and Maples were struggling over a gun when it fired and struck the woman.

Crawford is being held on $50,000 bond at the White County Law Enforcement Center on a charge of 2nd degree battery. His court date is March 4.
