ARKADELPHIA, AR – Aungelique Sledge scored a game-high 35 points as Henderson State beat Arkansas Tech 83-56 in Great American Conference women’s basketball action Saturday in Arkadelphia, Ark.
The win was Henderson’s first over Arkansas Tech since the Lady Reddies beat the Golden Suns 57-52 on Feb. 20, 2006. The Lady Reddies had lost 14 straight games to ATU prior to Saturday’s victory.
Sledge recorded her fourth 30-plus point game and set a Henderson State record sinking eight 3-point field goals.
Henderson State, 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the GAC, led from the start jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead on 3-point field goals be Jasmine Settles and Sledge.
The Lady Reddies built a 22-10 lead with the help of a 9-0 run as Sledge scored seven straight points.
Arkansas Tech, 6-6 and 2-4, cut the deficit to 24-23 with 6:26 remaining before Taylor Washington ended the Golden Sun run with a driving layup.
Washington’s bucket helped get the Lady Reddies rolling again as Henderson was able to push its lead to 43-30 at the break.
Henderson State started the second half much like the first as Sledge opened with a 3-point field goal to give HSU a 16-point cushion.
Arkansas Tech, however, chipped away at the Lady Reddie lead and climbed to within four points, 61-57 with 11:06 left in the game.
Henderson State then went on to outscore Arkansas Tech 22-8 the remainder of the game as the Lady Reddie defense limited the Golden Suns to just two field goals in 20 attempts the remainder of the game.
Settles finished with 14 points while Dulincia Keener scored 12 points.
Krystal Beachum also had a solid game with 8 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Anissa Pounds led Arkansas Tech with 18 points.
Henderson State finished the game shooting 42 percent, converting on 25-of-60 attempts. Arkansas Tech made just 22-of-67 attempts for 33 percent.
The Lady Reddies outrebounded the Golden Suns 46 to 38, but another big key to the win was free throw shooting. Henderson State converted on 22-of-24 attempts from the charity stripe for 92 percent.
Henderson State will next head to the Sooner state for a pair of games as they will face Southwestern Oklahoma on Thursday in Weatherford, Okla., before traveling to Alva to take on Northwestern Oklahoma on Saturday.
