BENTON, AR – A local man has been arrested after police find him hiding inside a secret escape hatch he had built under his mobile home.
It happened Monday, sending Joey Harrington, 43, to jail on a string of charges.
Police say detectives with the Benton Police Department Special Investigative Unit (SIU) in conjunction with the SWAT team executed a search warrant at Bailey’s Trailer Park on N. Summit Road. The warrant was in relation to a month-long investigation of Harrington for the alleged delivery of illegal narcotics (methamphetamine).
When officers first arrived, they met Julie Harrington, 40, but couldn’t find Mr. Harrington. They soon figured out he was hiding in the hatch located in the floor of the home. Police say he had built an elaborate tunnel system under the house and officers had to climb into it to arrest him. Despite resisting arrest, Harrington was taken into custody soon after.
He is charged with Delivery of Methamphetamine, Maintaining a Drug Premises, Unauthorized Use of Another Person’s Property to Facilitate a Crime, Resisting Arrest, and Disorderly Conduct. Police say he also had an active felony warrant from Saline County for back child support payments.
Julie Harrington was charged with Hindering Apprehension for actions taken to conceal the man’s location.
