LITTLE ROCK, AR — Work to restore Interstate 40 eastbound traffic on the White River Bridge is now complete. The eastbound lane was opened at 3:00 p.m. today, according to the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) officials.
Inspectors discovered damage during a routine examination of the bridge on Monday, March 25th. As a safety precaution, all eastbound traffic was detoured. Crews worked around the clock to re-establish traffic flow while repairs are being made. Images of that work can be found on Flickr.
The Interstate 40 White River Bridge is inspected every 12 months. It’s estimated that 30,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily, 58 percent of which are tractor-trailers. The bridge was constructed in 1968 and is 2,701 feet in length. It is scheduled to be replaced in 2015.
