LITTLE ROCK, AR – Two-year-old Stella Rose is in the hospital because she’s undergoing chemo. Friday, she got an early Christmas present, a razorback knit-hat, from a woman who she doesn’t even know.
“For me personally,” said Stella Rose’s mom, Amanda Mulhearn, “It’s the thought of people who don’t have a child here and don’t have this current situation that we have going on, and they’re willing to give their time and their money and their hats to make a little girl smile. That makes me feel good.”
The hat maker, who just met Stella Rose Friday afternoon, is Becca Willard.
“I have a little green owl, and I have a girly one,” she said while digging through her box of hats. “We got a little chicken.”
Willard says she makes and donates the hats because of a personal experience. A friend’s daughter battled cancer last year, and she lost her hair.
“I have a six-year-old girl myself and she’s got long blond hair,” said Willard, “and if I had to tell her that that was going away, I could just imagine the things I would be feeling and going through.”
So Willard started making and donating hats. She sells them through Facebook too. Every time someone buys a hat, Willard donates one. In this case, Stella Rose is the happy recipient.
“She went outside with it today, and i’m glad we had it,” said Mulhearn. “It’s a nice, cool, brisk day.”
