LITTLE ROCK, AR — The Bowl Championship Series is the way college football determines its national champion. But some people think there is a better way.
Monday night, Yahoo Sports Columnist Jeff Passan told an audience at the Clinton School why the series should dissolve. He says the current formula is unfair.
Right now, the BCS uses a three part system to determine who will play in the game. A third is determined by computer rankings. Another part is developed by the Harris interactive poll. The final slice of the pie comes from the USA Today Coaches poll.
“The Coaches Poll is usually filled out by coaches secretaries and sports information directors. The Harris Poll is usually filled out by people who are on the periphery of college football and have no idea what’s going on,” said Passan.
So Passan says the game should be determined in a playoff system. He gives his recommendation in a recent book he co-authored titled, “Death to the BCS. The definitive case against the Bowl Championship Series.”
“What you do in the playoff can make the difference between a disappointing season or being a true legitmate national champion,” said Passan.
But for now, the BCS determines who will fight for the championship trophy.
