It can happen anywhere, at any moment.

Most of the time the target is specific, and when they strike, it’s fast and frightening.

“Everyday there’s something going on…everyday.”

Kristen Fish hopes it never happens to her.

But when and if it does, she wants to know how to defend herself.

She hopes this self-defense class at Shoothouse USA in Conway will teach her how to do just that.

“Why wait until I’m attacked to do something?” Fish said. “I want to have every tool that I could possibly have to defend myself, so that I’m not a victim.”

Kevin Brown is a level three Krav Maga Instructor who specializes in hand to hand combat.

“It’s very simple to learn. It’s very simple to retain,” Brown said. “We’re teaching them natural body reactions to everyday attacks, whether it be a choke, bear hugs, hair pulls, or wrist grabs.”

“By going through those scenarios in class, they’ve already been exposed to that high stress situation and they’re able to react.”

Brown says the key is repetition. The more you practice, the better your chances are of escaping.

“It gives you a little more confidence that you wouldn’t normally have,” Brown said.

Confidence to react by instinct – and hopefully, escape unharmed.

“What you do in that very first second, could determine your outcome. That’s why you need to make it automatic,” Brown said. “It could save your life.”
