ALEXANDER, AR – An investigation is continuing into the death of a man shot by police, Saturday. The Officer involved is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The victim is identified as Carleton J. Wallace, 30, of Bryant. Wallace was shot as an Alexander Police Officer was arresting him.
Arkansas State police tell us Alexander Police Officer Nancy Cummings encountered Wallace, Saturday, about 4:30 PM, as he was walking along Brookwood Road. Officer Cummings stated she observed Wallace carrying a pistol tucked under the waistband of his pants.
State Police say according to Officer Cummings, Wallace threw the gun into a wooded area next to the road. While searching Wallace for other weapons and attempting to arrest him, Officer Cummings’ service weapon discharged.
State police wouldn’t clarify whether Cummings’ service weapon discharged intentionally or by accident. Alexander Police Chief Horace Walters said he wasn’t sure.
“Now that I don’t know because that’s what’s under investigation right now,” said Walters. “I haven’t even heard that.”
Chief Walters did say that Cummings has been on the force since January, when she received five weeks of training before hitting the road by herself. Otherwise, Walters says he’s now waiting for information from state police.
“I’m going to wait until I get all of the information before I make a decision,” he said, “because it would be unfair for me to make a judgement decision based on the least information that I have.”
Wallace was transported to Saline Memorial Hospital. There he was later pronounced dead.
Special Agents of the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division were requested to investigate the death by officials of the Alexander Police Department and Saline County Sheriff’s Department.
The body of Wallace and evidence collected from the scene is at the State Crime Laboratory for examination and analysis.
