Fursday: Euthanasia

Little Rock, AR — The National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy has estimated that around 3.7 million animals were euthanized in the nation’s shelters in 2008.

This morning we have Mike Wheeler, director of the Cabot Animal Shelter with us to tell us how we can save some of these pets, like Oscar the cat.

The HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) Estimates that animal shelters care for 6-8 million dogs and cats every year in the United States, of whom approximately 3-4 million are euthanized.

According to the HSUS, in the 1970s, American shelters euthanized 12-20 million dogs and cats, at a time when there were 67 million pets in homes.

Today, shelters euthanize around 3.9 million animals, while there are more than 135 million dogs and cats in homes.
