Stretching Your Dollar: How Homemade Products Save Big Bucks

Stretching your dollar takes a little extra effort but the savings can be huge.

Katina Robinson joined Greg Dee in the studio this morning to share some tips. Greg kicked things off by asking Katina about the $25 bottle of laundry detergent he bought recently and how he could save money while still getting clean clothes.

Katina showed him a recipe she uses of mixing the simple products that include washing soda and borax that she says costs only $8. See the recipe below.

Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe:
  • Borax
  • Ivory bar soap (or Fels Naptha)
  • Washing soda
  • water
Grate the soap into a saucepan and add 6 cups of water. Heat until melted. Add 1/2 cup Borax and 1/2 cup Washing Soda.

Stir until dissolved. Remove from heat.

Pour four cups into a large bucket, then add mixture.

Then add 22 cups of water (which=1 gallon + 6 cups).

Let sit for 24 hours until it will gel.

Use 1/2 cup per load.
