HOT SPRINGS, AR –(PRESS RELEASE) Garland, Clark and Hot Spring County residents can bring hazardous materials for drive-through disposal at two locations on Saturday, May 9th during Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day.
The event is sponsored by the Southwest Central Regional Solid Waste Management District in cooperation with the Hot Springs Sanitation Department.
The Garland County Fairgrounds, 4831 Malvern Avenue (Highway 270 East), will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. for safe, free disposal of unused or leftover household products containing toxic, flammable, corrosive or reactive chemicals.
Paint that is still usable and stored in the original container with a legible label can be brought to a free paint exchange area.
Electronic waste and passenger tires (no rims) will also be accepted for disposal at this site only.
Clark County residents may bring their materials to the Clark County Fairgrounds in Arkadelphia from 8:00 a.m. until noon on the 9th.
Hot Spring and Clark County residents may bring their materials to either collection location.
The event can help prevent hazardous items from being mingled with household trash, poured down sinks, toilets or storm drains, or dumped on the ground, thereby ending up in landfills, sewer treatment plants, storm drainage or septic systems, streams and lakes.
Left improperly stored at home, they can cause fumes and fires and can endanger animals and children.
Items that can be brought to the collection event include automotive substances such as antifreeze or brake fluid; paints, thinners, strippers and solvents; household pesticides and herbicides; water-based cleaners and bleaches; compressed gas cylinders; old kerosene and diesel fuel.
Electronic waste can include monitors, computers, keyboards, mice, VCR and DVD players, televisions 19” or smaller, electronic games and microwaves.
Recyclable electronics are also accepted weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the Regional Recycling Center behind the Hot Springs Sanitation Department office at 218 Runyon Street off of Valley Street.
The event is for household quantities only.
No commercial waste, unknown products or explosive materials will be accepted.
