HOT SPRINGS, AR – A man accused of beating his ex-girlfriend and her baby has been arrested. Michael Cannady was found hiding in a creek Monday night by K9 units after fleeing from sheriff’s investigators.
According to the warrant affidavit, the victim of the assault said Cannady kicked the door to her home, chased her out of the house, and attacked her in the street in front of the neighbor’s house, all while she was holding her baby. The affidavit says Cannady struck her numerous times with a gun, and also struck her daughter.
After being hit, the victim tried to get into a van parked in front of her neighbor’s house. In the affidavit, one person in the van says they saw Cannady point the gun and pull the trigger.
Investigators found six rounds of unspent .22 caliber ammunition, and parts of a .22 revolver on the pavement where the incident occurred. They also found blood in the street and in the van, and a bullet hold in the van.
The sheriff’s office says they found Cannady at a home in the 100 block of Watt Street in Hot Springs. When they arrived, Cannady fled into a wooded area. A K9 unit with the Hot Springs Police found Cannady hiding in a creek nearby where he was arrested without incident.
The warrant affidavit says the woman suffered lacerations on the back of her head, a broken hand, and several scrapes and cuts. The child had two “knots” on her head that “doctors were worried may cause bleeding of the brain, bruising around the right eye.”
The affidavit also says Cannady was convicted in 2009 of the felonies commercial burglary and 1st degree domestic battery. In Monday’s assault, Cannady is charged with aggravated residential burglary, 2nd degree domestic battery, 2nd degree battery, and aggravated assault.
