LITTLE ROCK, AR — Sarah Land is studying to take the GED test at the Saline County Adult Education Center. She did not want to become victim of a GED scam that has prompted a federal lawsuit.
“So I can at least go on and get my associates degree,” said Land.
She first thought about an online offer promising her GED at a price. But then she decided against it.
“I thought it would be the easy way out knowing I could cheat, use a calculator, and look up the answers. I wanted to prove to myself that I can do the GED,” said Land.
The decision saved Land more than just a little money and self-esteem. Right now a federal lawsuit has been filed by the GED testing service to shut down a network of fraudulent websites.
The scam is using the GED trademark illegally and charging to get the results from the test. But in Arkansas the test is free.
“Right now, any official place you take the GED test in the United States, you still have to take it in person with paper and pencil,” said examiner Chuck Carter.
There are even centers set up to help students prepare for the test at no charge.
