LITTLE ROCK, AR – Completion of bridge spans over Interstate 430 may require lane shifts or lane closures on the interstate next month AHTD officials said Wednesday.
The Arkansas Highway & Transportation Department says it plans to wait until the second week of June, after area school districts have released for the summer, to take the next step.
It is such a constant that change might be hard to notice at the 430 / 630 construction zone.
“It couldn’t get too much more confusing than it already is,” driver Randy Burrall says.
Well, it might.
AHTD needs to finish the bridge spans over Interstate 430 as part of the overhaul to the Big Rock Interchange. And that will mean affecting traffic flows on I- 430 as early as next month.
“I do not see all lanes ever being shut down but you never say never,” Glenn Bolick with AHTD says.
Bolick says the final decision on changes to I-430 is not ready yet, but he says drivers will notice. AHTD says special cranes will be brought in with additional trucks and there’s not a lot of space available unless you build new temporary lanes or close what you have.
“That’s the plan is to always have two lanes open in both directions,” Bolick says. “There’s never a guarantee but that is certainly what we’re shooting for.”
Bolick there are variables that AHTD is examining including doing a majority of the work at night or during weekends, but he added traffic flows are sometimes higher in the area during weekends.
If temporary lanes are built, AHTD says the actual work to complete the bridge over I-430 could happen later this summer.
AHTD expects to have a final decision on driver impact later this month.
