MCCRORY, AR – Jerry Emerson’s family is thankful he’s alive.
The 74-year-old is recovering in rehab after someone attacked him in mid August, leaving him in a coma just outside his Woodruff County apartment in McCrory.
He’s making drastic improvements and you would never be able to tell the severity of injuries like a skull fracture, broken nose and crushed cheek bones. However, his short term memory has suffered as well.
When asked if he’s aware of what happened or why he’s in rehab he said, “No. I just know I’m here.”
Sheriff’s investigators and State Police don’t have a suspect or a reason why anyone would do this.
“I was angry,” Vicki Dewitt said. “I wanted to investigate myself. I wanted to go find out who did this to our daddy.”
Vicki wasn’t alone as she feared her father would never wake up.
She said, “We had hopes that he would but we were also told he may not ever.”
The coma lasted three and a half weeks. He’s awake and alive now but it’s a slow process and he’s far from what he used to be.
“He may not ever be there but we’re just glad to have him back like he is now,” Vicki added.
While no one has come forward with information, the one person who was there and would talk, doesn’t have any idea what happened.
“Only thing I remember is what they tell me,” Jerry said. “I just wish I was able to cooperate with them.”
And he’s not sure of much of anything except for one thing.
“Well I don’t know why I’m here or what I’m doing here but I know I’m here,” Jerry said. “I know the quicker I can get out of here the better off I’ll be.”
Emerson’s family has continued to offer a $1,000 reward for any information that may lead authorities to the person responsible.
