LITTLE ROCK, AR – Attorney General Leslie Rutledge has approved a ballot title proposed to amend the Arkansas Civil Rights Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity to the groups protected from discrimination, and other purposes.
According to the attorney general’s office the earliest this could appear on the ballot, if enough qualifying signatures are gathered is in 2016 which is a general election year.
Sources tell us this is partially in response to the passing of the Religious Freedom Act on Tuesday by the Arkansas House.
Opponents fear that the law, also known as HB1228 will discriminate against gays.
The measure will now head to the desk of Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who has been urged by hundreds of people to veto it. Gov.
Hutchinson has already said he plans to sign the act into Arkansas law.
