PERRY COUNTY, AR – Call it the highway of taking chances. Drivers in Perry County braving Highway 160 on Wednesday,a road now covered by floodwater.
Biker Brandon Wilson says the overflowing Arkansas River should never had made to this milestone.
“I can’t imagine that this has been let go and it’s got to this point,” said Wilson.
Senator Jason Rapert said a nearby levee break from 1990 could be to blame for flooded homes and businesses in Perry and Faulkner counties.
A video shot by Rapert shows an overflowing area he said should have been fixed more than two decades ago.
“We need to take a look at this. I just don’t find it acceptable. They have identified levee inadequacy yet haven’t done anything to address them,” he said.
Rapert now calling for a legislative hearing to address Arkansas levees-which he says clearly needs oversight before they overflow once more.
“We just need to step up and make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
Perry County sheriff’s deputies on duty Wednesday night making sure drivers like Wilson make it through the water.
The biker who said levee issues in his hometown shouldn’t be exposed when their effects have already poured in.
“I’d like to see things done the right way.”
