LITTLE ROCK, AR — The Arkansas Attorney General says he supports the idea of allowing same-sex couples to marry.

At the same time, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel says he will continue defending the state constitution’s ban on gay marriage that was passed in 2004.

McDaniel made the announcement in a speech at an Associated Press editors convention in Little Rock Saturday morning.

The constitutional amendment defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman and bans same-sex marriage.

A group supporting same-sex marriage is challenging the ban in court.

A judge is expected to rule on the challenge early next week.
