RUSSELLVILLE, AR. – Arkansas Tech University has shut down a fraternity following charges filed in connection to hazing allegations.
According to a release, the Pi-Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi is no longer a recognized student organization at Arkansas Tech University. The release went on to say that disciplinary actions have been taken against Deonte Bradley, the student who has been charged in the case. Bradley has been suspended from participating in the Arkansas Tech football program.
“Arkansas Tech University has a zero tolerance policy for hazing rituals,” Vice President for Student Services and University Relations Susie Nicholson said. “Students involved in, encouraging, aiding and or assisting in hazing or hazing related activities are subject to a conduct review resulting in possible suspension or expulsion from the university.”
Through the course of a four-month investigation, Arkansas State Police and the Arkansas Tech University Department of Public Safety found evidence that the Pi-Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi was in violation of the 2011-12 Arkansas Tech student code of conduct, which prohibits hazing.
The fraternity, which had three active members at the time, was placed on suspension after the school learned about the alleged hazing on April 21.
Bradley appeared in Pope County Court Wednesday morning, and his bond was set at $20,000. His next court date is set for September 24.
Also charged in the case are Calvin Williams, Stephen Bender, and Klyantel Summons. Arrest warrants have been issued for them.
All face charges of battery 2nd degree, which can result in jail for up to 6 years and a fine of $10,000.
