Costco coming to Little Rock

UPDATE:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The worlds second largest retailer is bringing it’s business to the capital city.

The city of Little Rock says COSTCO filed paperwork to open their first store in Arkansas at the Southwest Corner of Chenal Parkway and Kirk Rd.

An empty lot that is almost 32 acres will soon be home to COSTCO. Southwest Little Rock already has several businesses that are booming and this new wholesale retailer will only make things bigger and better.

“There is something that is pushing developers to come to our city right now,” said Jaime Collins the Planning and Development Director of Little Rock.

In October Trader Joes opened its doors in Little Rock. Earlier this month Amazon announced they are coming to the city and now COSTCO is adding their name to the list.

“A new place to shop and I think it’s really good news that we are seeing some retail development with everything that’s going on with the coronavirus as well,” said Lance Hines the City Director of Ward 5.

“We are very enthusiastic about any developer coming to the City of Little Rock,” said Collins.

On Monday Collins said the wholesale retail giant applied to start the business at the Southwest Corner of Chenal Parkway and Kirk Rd.

“It’s a little bit different than other warehouse retail-type stores. Thye have a lot of similarities and different brands,” said Collins.

The facility would be over 165 thousand square feet. It would bring in about 250 jobs and 6 other outlets could also bring in their business.

“Well you know part of the last 2 to 3 years COSTCO has been looking at Little Rock,” said Hines.

There will also be a tire and fueling center, eye exam store and plans for a possible liquor pod.

“I look forward to it. I know they’ve already been out visiting with some of our neighborhoods in West Little Rock, my neighborhood in particular and that’s how I first heard about it,” said Hines.

COSTCO will go before the Planning Commission on May 14. The planning process should take 6 to 8 months.

Officials hope to start construction in February 2021 and have a grand opening in July.
