BRYANT, Ark. — A Central Arkansas liquor store is hoping to add Sunday liquor sales to its daily operations. Crossroads Wine and Spirits started a petition — and is now seeking help to get enough signatures to put the issue on the ballot for November’s general election.
Debbie Goolsby is the owner of Crossroads Wine and Spirits. She fills the inside of her store with written jokes down every aisle.”And we have a sense of humor in the store,” says Goolsby. But whats not a joke – a petition – she’s starting along with her husband to allow alcohol sales on Sunday.
“That was really customer driven because some of our customers would say, “I’ve been up to Branson and I’ve been to some of the liquor stores up there, on Sunday, so how come we can’t here,” says Goolsby.
Debbie and her husband shared their efforts in a Facebook post – asking customers who live in the Bryant city limits to sign a petition. A few people chiming in. One post saying” “I see no reason that there shouldn’t be alcohol sales on Sunday. I say yes.”
And another post saying: “People are going to drink regardless, whether on Sundays or not, so why not Sunday.”
But others near the store offered different views.
“No, it needs to be kept the way it is and if you can’t plan ahead and get it before the weekend then you really don’t need it,” says Cheryl France, who lives in Saline County. “Sunday is a holy day, we should not celebrate or do anything with alcohol it should all be done sober,” says Blair Gephardt, who lives in Saline County.
While opinions about the issue vary. One thing’s for sure, this store won’t stop trying to make a change for the future of alcohol sales here in the natural state. “There have been a lot of good things come together here,” says Goolsby.
It’s worth noting on Sundays you can buy alcohol to bring home from any brewery or distillery. The store will still need – close to 1,200 signatures in order for the issue to be placed on the November ballot.
