Cabot Stone Quarry Now Off Limits to Swimmers

CABOT, AR — A Central Arkansas stone quarry that’s turned into a popular swimming hole over the years will soon be off limits.

Cabot’s mayor says it’s an accident waiting to happen. He says kids dive from cliffs and jump off ropes at the quarry and it’s become way too dangerous, so he says the swimming must stop.

Mayor Bill Cypert said, “We were advised of some kids jumping off of high cliffs into some rocky areas.”

People around Cabot call it the Blue Hole, it’s off of South Second Street. Teens and young adults go there to cool off. But, in the past couple of years, the city of Cabot bought the property. It’s now being used to train local dive teams and also provide water to fire engines. But recently, city officials heard rumblings from nearby business owners about dangerous activities out there, like people jumping from high cliffs.

Mayor Cypert said, “We immediately are going to post it no swimming and trespassing.”

Along with the safety issue, the mayor says there’s another concern with what’s in the water, that’s why they sent off some samples to be tested.

Mayor Cypert said, “Of course that gives us further reason to allow no swimming.”

We also noticed exposed nails and large holes in the walkway to the quarry which could be another safety issue. And, while no signs are posted yet, police are already enforcing the no trespassing rule.

But one swimmer told us, “It’s disappointing because it’s the easiest place you can go where you don’t have to pay anything.”

The mayor says the “no trespassing” and “no swimming” signs will be posted at the quarry by the end of the week. If someone is caught swimming there, they could receive a citation.
