Children Donate Money to Help Homeless Man

CARLISLE- The kindness of strangers means a homeless man is in from the cold and sleeping in a warm bed after a 10-year-old decided to give him her allowance.

Lani Rogers got her brother and cousin to donate money, and they started asking other family members and friends for donations. Within an hour, the trio collected $140 for a homeless man to stay in a motel.

Joe Sanders’ only possessions are what he can carry. When 10-year-old Lani Rogers saw him wondering the streets of Carlisle, and again at Dollar General, she asked her mom if they could help. “He said he could use another box of coffee.”

Lani talked to her brother Chase about combining their money with their cousin Sammy’s money. “We raised enough money in one hour for 3 or 4 nights in a motel.”

9-year-old Sammy Hale says he thought it would be a helpful thing to do. “To save somebody so they won’t be cold and wet, and won’t get sick.”

Lani says their only motive was to do something nice. “We did not do this to get all the attention we’re getting. We did this to help him.”

Shawna Rogers says she’s very proud of her children and others in the community who came forward to donate clothes and food for Joe. “It was very inspiring for me to want to do more because Lani wanted to do more.”

Joe says not all people he encounters are as friendly. “I was surprised, really surprised.”

Shawna hopes her children’s generosity stays with them as they get older. “Most people won’t do this, and for kids to come up with it, I was very shocked.”

Joe says he’s very grateful. Thanks to the kids, he has enough money for another couple nights in the motel. The children plan to purchase Joe a bus or train ticket to get him back home to his family in Illinois.
