City of Conway reaches $1M settlement in unpaid wages case

Conway, Ark.- The City of Conway has reached a settlement in a 2012 lawsuit.

The case Shumate versus the City of Conway has 133 plaintiffs claiming they were owed about  1.3 million dollars in unpaid wages during the years of 2010 and 2012.

Monday night Conway’s City Council held an emergency meeting to approve the mayor to reach a settlement with the opposing party’s attornies.

The plaintiffs are more than 100 current and former Conway Police and Fire employees.

The preliminary settlement was signed by a judge Tuesday morning. It shows the city has agreed to pay a little more than a million dollars.

“We are pleased that our attornies were able to come up with a solution so that we can put this behind us and at the end of the day help out the folks that protect our greatest assets, the people of Conway,” explained city spokesman Bobby Kelly.

It is a settlement both sides are happy with.

“We feel real comfortable and real good about the settlement receiving one point one five out of one point three,” explain Attorney Tom Thrash.

Thrash said his clients should collect their money by October.
