LITTLE ROCK, AR – College Goal Sunday is a one day, statewide event created to help students and parents learn more about higher education and financial aid applications.
Robinson High School is one of 37 locations across Arkansas hosting College Goal Sunday events.
Shona Ruth has a daughter going off to college in the fall and says, “We’ve been waiting for this day since last year.”
Interested seniors and their families met in the Robinson High School computer lab to log on to the internet to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Arkansas Universal Scholarship Application (YOUNIVERSAL).
Marjorie Hooper is a guidance counselor at Robinson High School and volunteered her time to help.
“Seniors need to be filling these applications out and make sure they have all their ducks in a row before they graduate. Their paperwork has to be done before college.”
Students and their families thinking about education beyond high school most likely need financial help. Hooper says College Goal Sunday is the perfect place to get that help.
“The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is redesigned this year, and it’s a lot simpler.”
Even students who have already been accepted to college can still apply for financial aid.
Once students got online, they realized how quick and simple the process can be. Paul Curran is a senior, and will be attending UCA in the fall.
“It was really helpful coming here, because I knew nothing about this until I walked in here.”
Ruth says she has spent a lot of sleepless nights wondering how to pay for her daughter’s education, but College Goal Sunday makes the financial aid process less confusing.
“We need additional financial aid to help foot some of the additional bills.”
The Arkansas College Goal Sunday event is free for students and their families.
