JEFFERSON COUNTY, AR – Flood waters are rising high in central Arkansas. Thanks to the opening of locks and dams in Oklahoma, water is once again rushing down the Arkansas River flooding homes and neighborhoods.
“If you’re warned you can get ready, it’s this three to four foot, it’s this extra water we didn’t know about that has us in handicap mode,” says Chuck Gunn.
Island Harbor Estates has been underwater for nearly a week. Neighbors are taking boats to their houses while other residents decided to call it quits.
Homes slowly seeping under as rising water levels are expected to continue to climb throughout the week.
“Hit the ground running and literally we haven’t stopped,” says David Leonard.
Pine Bluff Salvation Army Commanding Officer David Leonard says more 2,000 bottles of water and more than 400 meals have been given to residents affected by the flooding near the swelling Arkansas River in the past two days.
“Salvation Army is going to the people,” Leonard says.
Despite the advice to evacuate from parts of Jefferson County officials say some neighbors remain in their homes. Saying that as long as they have power they will stay and continue fighting the flood.
“It’s supposed to come up four to five more inches by Thursday, we’ll have whatever comes up,” Gunn says.
