LITTLE ROCK, AR – Sounds secure, but handcuffs similar to these weren’t enough to hold Pulaski County inmate Aneal Castro-Hernandez who escaped while being transported to court on Monday morning.
“It’s not that far from here to the courthouse, but you do have 20 or 30 blocks that you are going to be driving, so he does have that time to sit there and try to manipulate them,” says Lietenant Carl Minden.
Them, referring to a pair of handcuffs that Hernandez was wearing but was able to get out of, but how? It’s not easy.
“If I’m gonna put this handcuff on and tighten it, there’s no way I’m getting my finger in there.”
But Lieutenant Minden says behind these concrete walls inmates have plenty of time to think of ways to break free.
“They take great pride and joy on trying to manipulate handcuffs,” says Lt. Minden.
Minden says right now there is no set number of deputies that ride along on the van. It all depends on how many inmates are being transported. However, protocol could change.
“We are looking at procedures, obviously going to be an internal investigation and make sure it’s not human error.”
“And the Hispanic community as a whole are on the lookout and beware of what’s going on out there.”
Local law enforcement put out a special plea to Hispanic media outlets to spread the word.
Sandra and Stephany – DJ’s with K-TUB 1440 Radio in Little Rock translated information I gave them on the case.
“Yeah, we are doing that and we actually put it on Facebook to so all the community knows about this,” says Stephany Ortega.
And there’s one thing Minden says Anael Hernandez needs to know,
“You may get away for a little bit.”
But local law enforcement will not give up.
Castro-Hernandez had been jailed on child rape charges since May 2013.
There is a reward up to $1,000 from Central Arkansas Crimestoppers for information leading to Castro – Hernandez’s capture.
