Dog Owner Concerned Over Conway Training Business

CONWAY, AR — The owner of Bull Sprig Retrievers — in Conway — says he runs a reputable business. He even sent KARK 4 News Reporter Melissa Schroeder numbers of several clients.

Those she talked to say they’ve been happy with his service. But one man feels completely different. He says he barely recognized his dog after she returned home from weeks of duck retrieving training.

Kenny Perry says his dog — Molly — is doing much better today. But just about a week and a half a go, Perry picked up Molly and she looked thin and had an injured ear.

Perry said, “Me and my wife are very sick about it.”

Perry brought his dog to Bull Sprig Retrievers. She stayed there for about three months and Perry paid the trainer $1,000. But the dog returned home looking and acting differently. Perry says she wasn’t trained either.

He said, “All she wanted to do was curl up and have nothing to do with nobody and was scared to death!”

We talked to the trainer Cody Springer by phone.

He said, “Usually at the end of the day everyone has been pretty happy with us.”

Springer runs his business outside his Conway home. He says Molly was aggressive during feeding time and got into a fight with other dogs which caused the ear injury. Springer also told us the dog ate twice as much food as necessary and may have lost weight from pacing in her kennel.

Springer said, “I didn’t think she was at an alarmingly skinny stage. I’m sure what they were used to seeing their dog at, or other dogs, maybe it was.”

Perry says he did text Springer a few times to check on Molly and was always told ‘she’s coming along.’ But he’s using this as a learning experience and offers some advice to other hunters.

He said, “And at least take the time to go by there and see your dog and make sure everything is fine.”

Springer told us he lets his clients know up front that not all dogs can complete the program. Perry says — that’s fine — he would’ve just liked to have known sooner about his pet’s issues.

We also called the Better Business Bureau, and there are no other complaints against Bull Sprig Retrievers.
