MORRILTON, AR – Late last week the historic old Sullivan High School burned. The building is where the Head Start program was housed.

The building that suffered the most damage was where the 3, 4 and 5-year-old’s classrooms were located. The Head Start program was only going to last two more weeks until students got out for the summer. Those classes have now been canceled until August.

For the other kids that went to Head Start, newborns to 3-year-old students, their classes will be relocated. The mayor of Morrilton says the director is still figuring out where they will be moved.

As for the building itself, the mayor says they are still trying to decide if they need to rebuild or buy a new building. Whatever option they choose, they will preserve some of the old building and put it with the new.

“The good thing is that we can build them a nicer, bigger, better building back and hopefully take some of that rock and put on the facade and keep some of the historic value,” says Morrilton Mayor Allen Lipsmeyer.

The Head Start program lost all of its books and supplies in the fire. City Hall is asking the public to donate those items. Anyone with old books, toys, and supplies to donate is asked to take them to City Hall. The city says the more items donated, the more money it can put into a building a much nicer building.
