HOT SPRINGS, AR — People in one Central Arkansas community are upset over a church group planning a missionary trip to West Africa after the ebola scare.
And now the man leading that African mission trip says he’s reconsidering.
Bags and bags of medicine are packed and ready to go at First Baptist Church in Hot Springs for a medical missionary trip to Senegal.
Dr. Jack Porter says they’ve been making the same trip for years. But this time, it’s different. People are blowing up the church’s phone asking the group — of nine missionaries — to stay put.
Cedric King said, “We don’t want that over here no one wants ebola over here in the U.S.”
Dr. Porter says the mission trip is to the country of Senegal.
It borders Guinea which is one of the hardest hit by the ebola virus. According to a health organization — called International SOS — there’s been only one case of ebola in Senegal….a person traveling from Guinea.
So right now, more cases have been confirmed in Texas.
Dr. Porter said, “If you make the analogy you should be more concerned about going to Dallas then you should Senegal.”
The trip is scheduled for November 6th and Dr. Porter says if the group doesn’t go, it’s not because of the fear of ebola, but rather the backlash from the community.
