LITTLE ROCK, AR – After 149 years of operation at the Little Rock Police Department, Alice Fulk has been named the first female Assistant Chief of the department.
Fulk and her friends said it’s something she has been working towards since college.
It was all applause and hugs Tuesday morning for newly named Little Rock Assistant Chief.
“This was my goal,” she said. “This level.”
Fulk is one of 14 Little Rock officers receiving a promotion. The only difference between Fulk and the others is that hers is a first for the department–something Chief Kenton Buckner is proud of.
“Of course it’s a celebratory moment for us. We are very proud that we have a female assistant chief; I wouldn’t lie to you about that. But at the end of the day, she will be judged by her body of work and I’m confident we have the right person for the right moment.”
This landmark moment coming after Fulk served 23 years in a number of positions at LRPD.
Her desire for law enforcement is something her friends say started early on.
A friend of Fulk, Kim Lester, said, “We took a class together in college doing something that you have always wanted to do. We rode along with Little Rock police officers and that’s how it all started”
After the ceremony, the real work begins.
Fulk will have a number of duties as assistant chief, something she is excited to walk into and open the door to making a difference.
“It’s very apparent that Little Rock needs to be transparent, that we need to show the citizens what we are doing. We need to back up what we say with the facts and that is something that is important to me.”
Fulk hopes her promotion to her new position will open the doors for other women in law enforcement.
