Well that’s what President Obama is proposing. Making community college free for all Americans.
White House spokesman Eric Schultz said the plan is expected to cost the federal government $60 billion over 10 years.
They would pick up 75 percent of the cost. The final quarter would come from states that opt into the program though it’s unclear where the money might come from.
An estimated nine million students could participate and save an average of $3,800 in tuition per year.
Pulaski Technical College which is the largest community college in the state agrees with the proposal.
College officials say they are pleased President Obama sees higher education as a priority and sees the role of community colleges, in particular, as crucial in providing affordable, accessible higher education.
Others we spoke with agree that having free community college would be beneficial especially one mom with a high school senior.
“To think that that would be an opportunity for him, and he might have more of an idea of what he wanted to major in be able to guide himself to the correct institution that would be the best for him,” says Terri Darling.
