Gunshots fired at rocket center in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) – Authorities say gunshots have been fired into the U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s Davidson facility in Huntsville.

WAFF-TV reports that three shots were fired into the building that houses the Saturn V rocket shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday. At least one bullet hit the rocket.

Investigators say the shots were likely fired from Interstate 565 that runs next to the tourist attraction.

Space center spokesman Tim Hall says the shots came from outside the Davidson center and struck windows of the building.

Authorities say there are no reports of injuries, and the scene is secure.

The Little Rock School District says 43 fifth-graders from Carver Magnet Elementary School Students were in the building at the time but were unhurt. The students are to leave as scheduled on Friday. The school has a space-themed curriculum and has sent students to the Huntsville center for 20 years.

Several school groups were at the museum at the time of the shooting.

Huntsville Police are investigating the shootings, and a news conference was planned.
