BENTON, AR – Saline County officials are leading an effort to help single parents go back to college.
Saline County Circuit Clerk Dennis Milligan has donated $500 to the Single Parent Scholarship Fund.
Single parents raising children alone receive a scholarship of $1,000 per year to help them complete their education.
The money can be spent for vehicle maintenance and repair, child care and other stumbling blocks that prevent single parents from attending school.
The Central Arkansas Development Council’s Saline County Single Parent Scholarship Fund program will hold its annual “Luncheon on the Courthouse Lawn,” at the Saline County Courthouse, 200 N. Main Street in Benton on Thursday, (May 9) from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The event is hosted by Saline County Judge Lanny Fite. The general public is invited.
Tickets to the event are $10 and include grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, pasta salad, chips, dessert and a drink. All proceeds benefit the scholarship fund. Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling (501) 778-1133, the Saline County Judge’s office at (501) 303-5640, or at the event.
Addition activities at the event include a silent auction, door prizes, and the opportunity to hear success stories from scholarship fund recipients. This year’s event will feature a salute to veterans.
The SPSF program provides scholarships to low income single parents who are pursuing a college education. Funds are used to offset financial situations that may keep a single parent from achieving their educational goals. The scholarship fund is a means for our community to assist single parents in returning to school to improve their marketable skills and make their goals attainable.
Each scholarship recipient is provided counseling, information, and referrals in the program. In return, the scholarship recipients participate in fundraising for the program, including the luncheon event.
The event will be attended by Saline County elected officials who will be on hand to talk with constituents.
According to the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund website, nearly one in five Arkansas families are led by single parents, of which 80% are single mothers. An estimated 43% of single-parent families were officially below the poverty line (2008-2010 American Community Survey) in 2010.
