HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – A new business aimed at reducing the number of people driving while under the influence gets hit by an alleged drunken driver.

JJ’s Pedicabs in downtown Hot Springs uses bikes that have carts attached to them to transport people from either one bar to another or to and from hotels.

“We’ve hauled over 25,000 people,” said JJ Bennett, owner of the pedicab company. “We want to get you there fast, fun, safe and friendly.”

In the 16 months it’s been up and running, the company has never had an accident.

That changed Saturday just before midnight though.

Hot Springs Police say a 26-year-old driver hit a pedicab, injuring its driver.

“A bike was upside down,” Bennett described. “A rider was on the side of the road covered in different types of road rash and abrasions and cuts.”

The accident struck a chord with Bennett. He says his own sister was killed by a drunken driver 18-years ago and this was personal for him.

The alleged drunken driver was released from the hospital and police are waiting on a toxicology report from the State Crime Lab.
