House Approves Social Media Privacy Bills

LITTLE ROCK, AR – The Arkansas House unanimously approved two bills aimed at protecting privacy of social media accounts.

Representative Nate Steel (D-Nashville) sponsors HB 1901 and HB 1902 which prevent an employer or university from asking a prospective employee or student their username and password to a social media site.

There are exceptions for accounts created for an employee’s job or in conjunction with a university.

“This is just aimed to keep our law up with technology,” Steel says. “This stuff is moving fast and this will help protect people from unreasonable searches by their employers or their universities.”

The measures now move to the Senate for consideration next week.
