LITTLE ROCK, AR — Hundreds of people came out to honor a Little Rock man who dedicated his life to serving the homeless.
Dennis Beavers passed away last week after suffering a heart attack.
For his memorial service, a group of people met under the Broadway Bridge Sunday afternoon.
It’s a place very special to Dennis, as he helped many homeless men and women in the same spot.
Dennis began the organization SOAR Network in 2009.
It’s an outreach to get churches, businesses and individuals to come together to help the homeless.
During his memorial service, people talked about Dennis’ heart and his compassion.
He never turned anyone away, even those who everyone else gave up on.
We spoke to one man who says he’d still be sleeping on the streets if Dennis didn’t help him four years ago.
Chris Lawson said, “I found him (Dennis) under the bridge one day when they were feeding under the bridge and he came and asked if I had any place to go and I told him no and he helped me find a place.”
Along with remembering Dennis Beavers today, other homeless advocates took the time to remind people to give back to the community and continue what Dennis started.
A big spot in the homeless community will be empty now that Dennis is gone, so supporters of the SOAR Network are looking for volunteers to work in two hour shifts once a week to help fill that void.
