Hundreds of Arkansans took over the steps of the state capitol Monday night for a Vigil for Justice, protesting the verdict in a Florida murder trial of George Zimmerman in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and pushing to end racial profiling.
Saturday, a jury found Zimmerman not guilty of second degree murder or manslaughter and in response, the Arkansas Legislative Black Caucus planned the event to and stand against racial profiling and discuss community solutions.
Many in the crowd felt the shooting incident started with Zimmerman profiling Martin based on race and say the case highlights the need to tackle the issue in Arkansas.
Attendees gathered peacefully with flashlights and cell phones held high while listening to state leaders discuss racial profiling and black on black crime. Community leaders discussed combating these issues with mentoring, civic engagement and building stronger, more positive relationships with law enforcement.
