JACKSONVILLE, AR — The interim superintendent for the new Jacksonville North Pulaski School District is recommending some building changes.
Jacksonville residents voted to separate from the Pulaski County Special School District (PCSSD) last year. Now, the process on running independent has begun.
Next school year, if PCSSD goes forward with plans to shut down Northwood Middle School, Jacksonville Middle School students will temporarily move into that building. In the 2016-17 school year, the goal is to permanently move Jacksonville Middle School students into the North Pulaski High School. That means those high school students would go to Jacksonville High until a new high school is built.
Some folks, however, say that’s not a good move.
Keith Weber said, “You’re going to be going to a school that has an outdoor hallway, bathrooms are cold, the hallways are freezing. They’re going to say ‘forget that’ and move to Cabot or Sherwood.”
There’s no definitive timeline on when the new Jacksonville High School will be built, but according to Interim Superintendent Bobby Lester, it would be at least two to three years.
He said, “In the future we want to build schools in Jacksonville and remodel so they compare to Conway, Searcy and Cabot and other schools, our buildings are just dilapidated.”
Lester says the Little Rock Air Force Base is making plans to donate 300 acres of land to the new school district for the Jacksonville High School.
